Paws & Protection: How to Keep Your Dog Safe During Florida’s Heat

Florida summers aren’t just hot — they’re dangerously hot, especially for our furry companions. At Elite Scoops, we care about more than just cleaning your yard — we care about your dog’s health and safety, too.

Here are a few must-know tips to keep your dog cool, hydrated, and safe during those scorching summer months.

1. Hydration Is Everything

  • Dogs can get dehydrated quickly in the heat, especially if they’re playing outdoors or going on walks. Make sure they always have access to:
Fresh, clean water — both inside and outside
  • Portable water bowls on walks
  • Electrolyte-infused treats (like dog-safe ice pops) during extreme heat

Pro tip: If your dog’s gums are dry or sticky, or they’re excessively panting, those are early signs of dehydration.

2. Watch Out for Hot Asphalt & Concrete

  • If it’s too hot for your bare feet — it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

Sidewalks, streets, and even patios can reach 130°F+ during peak sunlight, causing burns and blisters within seconds. Here’s how to protect their paws:

  • Walk early or late when the sun is low
  • Stick to grassy paths when possible
  • Use dog booties or paw wax for added protection
Check paw pads after each walk for redness or cracks

Try the 7-second test: Place the back of your hand on the pavement. If it’s too hot to hold for 7 seconds, don’t walk your dog on it.

3. Avoid Midday Exercise

  • Midday is the most dangerous time for overheating. Dogs can suffer from heatstroke in minutes, especially breeds with shorter snouts (like bulldogs or pugs). Opt for:
    Morning or evening walks
  • Indoor playtime during peak hours
  • Shade breaks during yard time

4. Know the Signs of Overheating

  • Be on the lookout for signs of heat stress:
  • Excessive panting
  • Drooling
  • Lethargy or weakness
  • Vomiting
    Bright red or pale gums

If you suspect heatstroke, move your dog to shade, provide cool (not ice-cold) water, and contact your vet immediately.
