Paws & Protection: How to Keep Your Dog Safe During Florida’s Heat

1. Hydration Is Everything

Dogs can get dehydrated quickly in the heat, especially if they’re playing outdoors or going on walks. Make sure they always have access to:
Fresh, clean water — both inside and outside
Portable water bowls on walks
Electrolyte-infused treats (like dog-safe ice pops) during extreme heat

Pro tip: If your dog’s gums are dry or sticky, or they’re excessively panting, those are early signs of dehydration.

2. Watch Out for Hot Asphalt & Concrete

If it’s too hot for your bare feet — it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
Sidewalks, streets, and even patios can reach 130°F+ during peak sunlight, causing burns and blisters within seconds. Here’s how to protect their paws:
Walk early or late when the sun is low
Stick to grassy paths when possible
Use dog booties or paw wax for added protection
Check paw pads after each walk for redness or cracks
Try the 7-second test: Place the back of your hand on the pavement. If it’s too hot to hold for 7 seconds, don’t walk your dog on it.
